An emergency stop button is the one control on a machine that has to be found without being looked for. It is red, it says STOP, it stands proud of the handlebar, and it must survive seasons of sun, rain and a boot knocking into it. The part shown here is that button for a lawn mower: a one-piece red moulding with the word moulded into the face and two long arms that reach down and clip onto the handlebar assembly.
The two photographs show the face and the back. The face is simple on purpose; everything worth discussing is behind it. The arms are spring features that snap over the mating bracket, and the back carries the rib network that keeps a broad, thin part rigid.

On a safety control, a printed label is a liability: it fades in sunlight and wears under hands, and then the button is a red blob with no message. Moulding the lettering into the tool removes that failure. The lettering stands slightly proud, and the mould cost is a one-time price for text that lasts the life of the part.
The trade is that the lettering is fixed at the tooling stage. A customer who wants different wording on a later model needs a cavity change, which is why the wording, its depth and its position are confirmed against the artwork before steel is cut.
The two arms reaching down from the body are the whole attachment. They spread to pass over the mating bracket and snap into place, and their grip has to stay firm through vibration, which a lawn mower produces plenty of. Arm stiffness, engagement depth and lead-in angle are read together: an arm that is too stiff will not spread without white stress marks and cracking, and one that is too soft lets the button work loose over a season of bumps.
Because the button clips on without fasteners, assembly is a press fit at the end of the handlebar line. That only works if the clip dimensions repeat, which they do when the features come out of the same tool rather than being trimmed or adjusted by hand.

A wide button face with no support flexes when pressed, which feels wrong and, over seasons of pressing, fatigues the clip arms. The rib network on the back adds the stiffness without thickening the face, which would sink and show around every rib tip. Rib thickness is held to a fraction of the wall so the face stays clean on the visible side.
The same ribs help the moulding: they guide the flow across the broad face so it fills evenly, and they keep the packing pressure reaching the far corners where the arms attach, which is where a short shot would matter most.
The colour is specified in the compound, matched to the customer’s master and compounded with UV stabilization, because a safety control that fades to pink stops reading as a safety control. Outdoor exposure is the design condition here, not an afterthought: the resin and the master batch are chosen for the machine’s life outdoors, not for the showroom.
Clip engagement and retention on the actual bracket, sampled across the lot. Arm flex during assembly, checked for white marks and cracking. Colour against the approved master under daylight. Dimensional report on the clip spread and the face height, since the button has to stand proud of surrounding parts for the hand to find it.
