A flip-sip thermos lid asks a lot from one moulded piece. The flip cover has to swing open one-handed, the sip channel has to seal both against weeping in a bag and against the pressure a hot drink builds overnight, and the whole cap threads down onto a steel mouth whose dimensions it does not control. The lid shown here handles all three with a threaded base, a moulded carry loop and a sealing assembly on the underside that is more considered than it looks.
Four views cover the lid open, the underside, the closed top and the profile. The underside is the informative one: the sip bore, the sealing plug with its soft centre and the thread stack are all in that one view.

The moulded plug visible on the underside is not a simple stopper. Its centre carries a soft element that conforms to the sip bore and closes it, while the rigid body around it provides the structure and the locating geometry. Hard against hard only seals where surfaces are perfect; soft against hard seals over small imperfections and, just as importantly, releases cleanly when the cover flips open instead of sticking with a pop.
The centre of the plug also carries a small valve feature. A completely sealed lid is a problem in itself: as hot liquid cools, the pressure inside drops and the lid becomes hard to open, and as liquid leaves through the sip channel, air has to enter or the flow stutters. The valve relationship between the plug and the vent is tuned so the lid vents when it should and seals when it must.

The sip cover runs on a living hinge, and its life is decided at the tooling stage. The hinge zone is gated so melt flows across it rather than along it, because a flow line lying along the hinge is a crack waiting for a cycle count. End stops moulded into the body define the open and closed positions, so the user’s thumb never becomes the stop, and the feel of the action stays the same across the run.
The open position is chosen with the user’s face in mind: the cover stands back far enough that it does not drip on the hand holding the bottle, and its geometry keeps it from flopping closed mid-drink.

The thread stack around the skirt compresses the base seal against the bottle mouth, and its form is built to the bottle rather than standardized, because a generic thread that mostly fits is a lid that mostly seals. The moulded thread is gauged with the actual mating mouth, and the torque window, tight enough to seal, light enough to open wet-handed, is checked rather than assumed.

Hinge cycle life, run past its rating. Seal under pressure, closed on hot water and laid on its side. Vent behaviour, checked so the lid does not vacuum-lock as liquid cools. Cover retention in the open position, and thread torque against the agreed window.
Kunshan Maifeng Precision Industry Co., Ltd. reviews drinkware closure designs before quoting, builds the injection molds in house, and molds single-color and dual-color parts on 36 machines from 90 to 700 tons. Send us the bottle mouth drawing and the drink profile, and we will come back with a feasibility comment and a tooling proposal.
