A tumbler lid that gets carried by its handle asks one question of that handle: will it still be attached in a year? The lid shown here answers with metal. The carry handle pivots on two metal hinge pins set into the lid body, so the load of a full tumbler passes through steel rather than through a moulded plastic hinge that flexes every time it is picked up.
The lid itself is a threaded flip-sip cap in black resin. The sip cover opens and closes on a moulded living hinge, the underside carries the sealing features, and the thread takes a sealing ring against the tumbler mouth. Two views are shown: the closed lid with the handle up, and the inside with the sip spout and seal.

Most carry loops on lids are living hinges, and they work, within their rating. The limit shows up when the lid is lifted by the loop while full, day after day: the hinge root takes the whole weight of the vessel on every lift, and plastic under repeated bending eventually whitens and fatigues. Mounting the handle on metal pins moves that load into shear through the pin, which plastic tolerates almost indefinitely.
The pins are pressed into moulded bores with capped heads on the outside, so nothing stands proud to snag. The bores are the critical dimensions: too loose and the handle rattles and develops play; too tight and the pin locks the handle in place. The bore diameter and the pin are gauged together, and the fit is checked by swinging the handle through its travel on a sample from each lot.

The sip cover opens on a moulded living hinge and closes over the spout bore. Its travel ends against moulded stops rather than against the user’s fingers, so the action feels the same from the first opening to the ten-thousandth. The cover’s sealing face seats onto the spout with a small interference, enough to stop weeping in a bag, not so much that opening needs two hands.
Inside the bore, a moulded plug with a soft element provides the real seal while the lid is on the tumbler. Separating the two jobs this way, cover for daily access, plug for the actual seal, lets each be designed for its own duty instead of one part doing both badly.
The thread is moulded at full depth and sized to compress the sealing ring against the tumbler mouth as it is tightened. On a vessel that spends time in a backpack, the seal has to hold both static pressure from a hot drink and the mechanical sloshing of being carried, which is why the ring seat is a moulded groove with defined width and depth rather than a flat face where a ring happens to sit.
Handle pin fit, checked by swing and by pull on a sample from each lot. Hinge cycle life on the flip cover, run past its rating on a fixture. Seal integrity with the lid torqued onto the tumbler and the vessel laid on its side. Thread form, gauged with the actual tumbler mouth.
